Audio experience never to forget. I was invited to listen to a system, and it certainly was an audio experience never to forget!
.It all started with a phone call and I was asked if I would like to visit a friend of one of my friends as he had something that he knew I would like to see and he assured me that it was indeed very interesting. This was one of those times when you just do what you feel you have to and so I said yes great where and when and with all the information I was on my way.
Sometimes I just never know what to expect and it always ends up with another interesting experience and this as it turned out was an audio experience never to forget. I arrived at the building and called my friend who came to meet me and showed me into the listening room where I met three of my other music friends and the owner of the equipment. I said hello and we shook hands and then we sat down and he put on the music and we started to listen.
The music was from computer and passed to a DAC and then to the preamp and to a pair of Monoblock amplifiers that were hand built using components that were of the highest quality and no expense had been spared in this project and everything had been done exactly as it was meant to be!
The Mono-block amplifiers were a beautiful creation and the owner was very proud of what he had built and also pleased that we had come to visit and listen to his accomplishment.
The thing that struck me was that everything had been made so simple and was very easy to get to and also there were just the right amount of components necessary to make the system operate as per the owner design.
.The amplifier was quite amazing to look at and I was very impressed by the quality and the size of the components used which gave me a clear indication that the owner really loved what he had created.
It is always so good to see what a person can do with components and as I am living in Lithuania I am fortunate to meet such people who have the Russian knowledge and technique to build a really beautiful piece of equipment like this and something to be really proud of and, in this case, it really was indeed something special.
The loudspeakers were Tannoy 15″ Red monitors which had been fitted into the famous Lockwood audio enclosures and had been very well done and so were in great condition.
I am a Tannoy lover myself as I consider Tannoy to be amongst the best in the manufacture of quality Loudspeakers. I have had so many different models it is hard to keep track of them all but I do prefer the sound from a 15″ monitor above anything else and so it was a real pleasure to see the Tannoy’s when I first came into the listening room.
Lockwood audio is specialized in the manufacture of loudspeaker enclosures and has many years of valuable experience to offer so please feel free to visit their site.
I have to say at this point that every person hears things differently and people tend to focus of the sound that they prefer. One person pays attention to the bass response and the depth of the bass while another person is more interested in the highs and the ultra highs. Also, to every person, his system is always the best and this is because he is used to the sound of his own system.
I am a very lucky person because I have some very good friends who have the same passion for music and are all very serious professional people who like me have been involved in audio all their lives.
But for some very strange reason, I am still referred to as “the Expert” and why this is I do not really know but maybe it’s because I am English but I will say they really do value my opinion and whatever I say is always agreed upon in the end!
As I said earlier each person thinks that his system sounds the best and this is because it has been adjusted to his ears and what is great for him is not always great for everyone else and when we sat down to listen this became apparent to me within the first few bars of music.
The sound was very harsh in the middle and had no focus and was just wandering around and so I asked the owner if it would be OK for me to move the speakers, as I would make the system sound much better.
He said it was very hard to get a good sound because the room was small and there were lots of reflections but I was more than welcome to give it a try.
For me, this was great as I could see this one was very easy to fix and so I paced out the speaker center and then measured the back wall space and within ten minutes the system sounded totally different. Everything was in place and focused and the harshness had gone from the music. At this point, one of my friends said that he was surprised that by repositioning the speakers could improve the actual harshness in the sound and it was a new one for him!
The result was that the system sounded very good and showed just how good a pair of mono blocks can actually sound. Everything was there that you would expect in the way of detail, space, dynamics, bass and sound stage and the Tannoy’s really performed well bringing out everything that the system could offer.
There were a couple of issues and one was that the bass had a touch of bloom around the bottom end but this could be easily fixed by putting a carpet on the floor. Also, the system was still a touch on the hard side and lacked the musicality that one would expect from tubes but again this can be easily fixed or “fine tuned” by using a different interconnect and power cord.
Audio experience never to forget
I had been asked by my friend to bring a set of my own cables with me just to try if necessary. I asked the owner if it was OK to do this and he gave me the green light and to cut a long story short what a difference they made to the sound and so this really was an audio experience never to forget.
