Acoustic energy: Design

The evolution of carbon fibre drivers from the 500 Series to a specially developed second-generation design demonstrates Acoustic Energy’s commitment to continuous improvement.

Bass System:

CORINIUM’s bass system underwent a comprehensive overhaul, with a brand-new 140mm carbon fibre cone and a low hysteresis motor system for optimal efficiency and speed. And a unique approach taken to achieve a compact yet powerful bass system that maintains a natural sound and scale.

Crossover Design:

A detailed discussion on the 3-way crossover design reveals Acoustic Energy’s commitment to achieving the best integration of power and phase. And highlighting the importance of fine-tuning the frequency response for a natural, dynamic, and entertaining sound. Also, emphasising the role of listening and experience in achieving speaker excellence.

Internal Cabling:

The careful selection of components and internal cabling to achieve optimal sound quality. And defending the decision to use a single pair of speaker terminals, using the superiority of high-quality speaker cables over the complexity of bi-wiring.

Cabinet Construction:

CORINIUM’s beautifully curved Resonance Suppression Composite (RSC) cabinets, with a minimum thickness of 22mm, showcase a commitment to both form and function. Also, having a curved profile, superior material selection, and the final impact on acoustics.

Precision Tilt:

And the reasoning behind the tilt and the meticulous design of the bass and mid-range chambers is simply for the perfect sound.

Testing

In the image presented, two sets of loudspeakers are featured. The outer set comprises the Corinium model from Acoustic Energy, while the inner set is crafted by Apertura Audio, A distinguished French company renowned for producing some of the finest-sounding speakers I have encountered thus far. And found it intriguing to conduct a comparative test, pitting British craftsmanship against the excellence of French audio engineering.

Amplifier

To assess the capabilities of the Corinium loudspeakers, we opted for the Rotel Michi X3 Series 2 audiophile Integrated Amplifier. My initial encounter with this amplifier in June 2023 left a lasting impression. And it demonstrated an ability to deliver precise and detailed audio information. Revisiting it for this evaluation only reinforced my appreciation for the amplifier’s prowess. Also, the amplifier’s capacity to reproduce audio with accuracy was striking, providing a captivating and immersive listening experience.

Cables

Cables play an important In the testing phases. And the set of cables used were from the DEDALUS series, supplied by RiCable from Italy. Also, the Loudspeaker testing held at Garso Namai, Kauno g. 31, 03215 Vilnius, Lithuania. And I will visit the studio next month for and update and more testing, so stay tuned!

The sound

The initial decision was to commence our listening session with the familiar sound of the French speakers. And seeking to heighten the anticipation, we chose to elevate the experience by incorporating the audio cables provided by RiCable, exploring the potential for discernible improvements. As the initial test track began, we closely monitored the system’s warm-up process, leading to enthusiastic comments on the notably enhanced quality of the entire audio output.

Continuing our assessment with our preferred test tracks, we carefully noted subtle differences and improvements in the overall performance of the system. Satisfied with the results and the now-optimised setup, our attention turned towards testing the Corinium loudspeakers. And the next step involved a straightforward replacement of the French speakers with the British counterparts, initiating another listening session to gauge the performance of the Corinium loudspeakers.

The result

I’m thoroughly impressed with the sleek and futuristic design of the Corinium speakers. And their appearance suggests a deliberate effort to exude a contemporary aesthetic. Now, let’s talk about the auditory experience. And It only took three seconds to notice a remarkable shift in sound. The initial standout was the significantly more captivating and richer mid-range. And the music embraced a heightened level of intrigue, power, and personality. Also, every element of the musical performance felt enhanced, comparable to the sensation of upgrading from six to eight cylinders in a high-performance engine. Though it might sound unusual, the transformation was undeniably impressive. And without reservation, I recommend these speakers to anyone eager to elevate their audio experience.
