How to improve a sound
How is your sound and are you happy with the sound you hear? How do you know if your system is giving you the best sound that it could? And what can you do to improve the sound? I know from my own experience the majority of people reading are not happy and not getting what they want so I have written this How to improve a sound blog.
I have spent years working with audio and visited may people who think their audio system sound is great but when the proud owner invites me to listen to his audio system it quickly becomes apparent how far out of sync his audio system really is. So let us find out “How to improve a sound”.
Hi-End system
I am going to show you three systems I have worked with over the past two years and this is really a great way to show you just How to improve a sound. There is a very easy way to make your system sound better by simply adjusting the position of the loudspeakers in the listening room.
This is a beautiful system and set up in London, England and is using Tannoy Kingdom Royal loudspeakers that cost 55,000 USD and they look great and sound great but when I first arrived it was a completely different story.
The latest Tannoy Kingdom royal, really is an amazing sounding loudspeaker and one of Tannoy’s finest achievements to date. Since I set up this system Tannoy have introduced a carbon version, which is supposed to sound better. I have not heard and so I am unable to comment but for more information please click here
The position
The position is perfect. If you look closely, you will see that each loudspeaker is a certain distance from the rear wall and also a certain distance from the sidewalls. You will also see there is a carpet a certain distance from the front of the loudspeakers. You will also see the table is a certain distance from the front of the loudspeakers. To have a table in this position is not ideal but sometimes it is unavoidable and we have to make the best of the situation. You will also see the loudspeakers are angled inwards towards the listener and this is critical for the loudspeakers to be in sync.
It took a few hours to get this system sounding correct and was done by sitting in the listening position and having the speakers look back at you. All you have to do is look at the enter of the cone of the left hand speaker and it has to be looking directly back at you and you get this by gradually toeing in or out the speaker a centimetre at a time. When you are happy with the sound you do the same with the right hand speaker and that is the key on How to improve a sound.
Hi-fi system
This is a pair of Tannoy Edinburgh’s and they are located in Vilnius, Lithuania and the cost today is about 2000 euros. The Loudspeakers are in great condition and really fit in with the surroundings. They look great and sound great but it was a different story from when I first arrived.
The position
If you look closely, you will see the loudspeakers are a certain distance from the rear wall. They are also a certain distance from the sidewalls and again a certain distance from the carpet. The carpet is just as the picture starts at the bottom. These loudspeakers are placed on SoundCare spikes and this because the floor is wooden and the spikes help to prevent unnecessary vibrations from reaching the source machine. It took about three hours to set up this system and it was pleasure to listen to. It has often been said the Tannoy Edinburgh suffers from lack of bass but I certainly had all the bass that I could wish for from a 12″ driver.
Stereo system
The last system was the highly regarded Tannoy Berkeley built in 1970. The cost of these loudspeakers today is about 950 GBP and these particular Loudspeakers were set up in Chiswick, London UK.

There really is something magical about the sound that comes from the Tannoy Berkeley. These loudspeakers were used in the well know recording studios in the seventies and they have a tremendous following today.
If you look at the set up you will see they are a certain distance from the rear wall and also a certain distance from the sidewalls. The loudspeakers are a certain distance from the carpet and also they are angled inwards to the listening position. So what does this mean and why are all these distance so important? The answer is simple and it is because of the way the loudspeakers sync together. They can be in Harmony working together or they can be in disarray and not working together. Loudspeakers in sync sound wonderful. The set up was very easy on this and took only an hour but the sound was something that I will never forget!
Conclusion
When a pair of loudspeakers are correctly positioned they give the correct imaging. This means the vocal is exactly where it is supposed to be. The loudspeakers will show exactly where all the instruments are placed. They will give you the correct amount of bass response. They will allow you to be aware of the total sound stage and you will hear details from around you and even coming from above. The room becomes alive and you feel like you are really a part of the performance and you do not want to turn the music off. That is what the correct positioning of your loudspeakers will give you.
This is something that I love to do because it helps people to really enjoy the sound from the existing system.
