Big and beautiful, an audiophiles dream

An audiophile’s dream

Do you have a dream I wonder because I often think just how hard it is to keep up with the changes in the world of the audiophile?

Technology today is bringing amazing advancements into our world and it is so very interesting to see and to listen to some of these amazing works of art.

Big and beautiful

How big does a loudspeaker have to be to make an impression? How big does a loudspeaker have to be to sound good? How far do we have to go until we are satisfied?

There are questions that have many answers and it all depends on whom you are talking to and whether the person is a true audiophile of just a person who wants to make an impression. We have moved from a loudspeaker housed in a small wooden cabinet to very large and impressive looking space age monsters.

The world of audio is now become more involved or growing for want of a better word into the art world. There is now so much attention to detail in the design and appearance of a loudspeaker that seems to say “if it looks good, then it must sound good”.

.

Design

This is where we start to see how things are really changing and that the arts are becoming more apparent in the loudspeaker world.

We are very fortunate in the thing that we can find to build the loudspeaker with. There are woods, plastics, metals and an assortment of materials that are available and also in an amazing range of colours.

The only limit is to the person’s imaginations because anything can be done and any size can be made.

Lend me your ear

Different shapes and different sizes are all so interesting and it really makes you wonder how far it will go.

I am amazed every day when I see pictures from all over the world and what people are building and I would love to be able to visit every person who is building these amazing looking cabinets just to hear what they sound like because even though it looks fantastic, I am afraid it may sound the complete opposite.

There are certain things that make the sound and this is basically the movement of air from the Driver to the listener but it has to me air that is moved in the correct manner.

Old school

vintage audio

Take this Tannoy GRF memory loudspeaker that was Designed and built 1998 by Tannoy of England.

The loudspeaker looks beautiful in every way and effortlessly reproduces any type of music in a thoroughly involving and supremely enjoyable way. The sound cannot be compared to anything else because it has it’s own magical and natural Tannoy sound.

The sound is know and involving and the more to listen the more you want to listen and for me Tannoy is the best sound loudspeakers ever made.

New wave

Lousspeakers15"special

This is one of the latest loudspeakers that I was able to listen to when I attended the audiophile show in Vilnius, Lithuania in October last year.

Four rear facing drivers and one forward facing mid/high tweeter assembly. I call this the new wave sound because it was very fast and very effective but it had to have the right type of music played to understand the sound that it offered.

I must say that I was not knocked off my feet and was not really interested in spending too much time to listen because I like to hear music and I love to feel the warmth of the music, which this was not able to give me.

The dream

So what is your dream and what would you like to hear in the future? Are you dreaming of building your own cabinets and fitting the very latest drivers into the enclosures or are you dreaming of winning the lottery and having a new pair of custom-made monsters delivered to your listening room?

Are you “Old school” or are you “New wave” because it does not matter what you are as long as you enjoy the music that is all that matters!
