Do you like high quality vintage audio? I know that I certainly do. And I think the sound produced from vintage audio equipment is simply the best. Good quality used audio equipment and is second hand is often tough to find. Because you never know the history. And therefore why is it for sale. But where to start and how much to spend? I think you must take your time and do research first!
high quality vintage audio
If you are looking for a high-quality loudspeaker, then you have quite a choice in the vintage audio world. Because you can find Vintage loudspeaker (or drivers as they called) in the world of the audiophile). And install them into cabinets or Enclosures (as named) in the audiophile world). Also, you can construct yourself. You can find many plans on the Internet to help you. An excellent site that you can visit to find techniques and ideas for building cabinets is right here →
My favourite sounding drivers are made by an English company Tannoy. And Tannoy have been in business for years and make fantastic drivers. There is a tremendous following for Tannoy drivers, and prices are going up every year. And, in a way, to own a good vintage Tannoy is somewhat of an investment. The Tannoy monitor Red. which is one of the most popular drivers can sell for as much as 3000 USD a pair?
Amplifiers
If you are looking for a very high-quality amplifier then again have an extensive choice in the vintage audio world. Because many of the old amps will never die. After all, they sound so good and made so well. If you want a Transistor amplifier or a tube amplifier, then it is an open door for you. Do you like high-quality vintage audio
I have to say that one of my favourite amplifiers is the Grundig SV-140, which was made in 1969 and has such a beautiful rich musical sound that is virtually impossible to beat. A Grundig SV-140 amplifier can still find for 350 to 750 Euros. And I think this is the best buy in the vintage marketplace today but oh so rare!
There are many amplifiers that you can find ranging from 100 USD to 500 USD and are all great sound amplifiers. If you look hard enough, you can still see the one you want in beautiful condition and full working order because they were all built like tanks!
Tube
Tube amplifiers are another consideration as many people prefer the warmth of the tube rather than the somewhat more relaxed sound a transistor amplifier will give you. And with a tube amplifier, it is the tube that is responsible for the sound you hear. There are output tubes that can be found on the Internet and one, in particular, is the General Electric tube, which is NOS and dates back to 1941.
You can still find them, but you will need a few hundred USD in your pocket. And in my opinion, the best tube sound is from the 211 tube, as it gives everything from the music. Again this is a personal choice as we all hear things differently. Another very highly respected tube is the 300b, and these are less costly but do still give a stunning sound. And in some circles, the 300b is still the king! Do you like high-quality vintage audio
Turntables
A vintage turntable is another item you find very quickly today as there are so many for sale. You do have an endless choice, and they can be bought from 200 USD to 500 USD for an excellent model which operates correctly.
One of the things to look for when buying a turntable is what type of cartridge supplied because usually, it will be a reasonably introductory cartridge. You will be surprised just how good the turntable can sound when fitted with an excellent cartridge and sometimes you can be lucky and find a turntable that has a suitable cartridge with it.
My favourite cartridge was manufactured by an American company called Shure, who are still are making beautiful sounding cartridges. This particular cartridge was called the Shure V15 III and is a legend. The sound from the cartridge is neutral and musical. The Shure V15 III can still be found NOS but does fetch a high price sometimes 350 USD but believe me; it is worth to pay that much money because the sound is simply outstanding.
Where to find?
Three things are all that is necessary to bring beautiful music into your home, but where can you find such items that are in good condition and sound correct. In Lithuania, I have many friends who have such items, and so I have opened a page for used equipment and over the next couple of weeks will be adding to this list. These will be items that I know and have heard and guaranteed that they are in perfect working order. I also have contacts with different music shops in Lithuania and often see beautiful things and in some cases are rare, and so I will be able to offer these to you as well.
The cost
The cost of the items will be the same price as what the person is selling them. No eBay fees, No handling fees, No agent’s fees so it will be the lowest price that you could ever pay. And, all part of the service. Because we love what we are doing and that is to help as many people as we can to improve their sound in every way possible.
